The Problem
A highly successful aluminium and steel boat builder Telwater, who manufactures the Quintrex and Stacer brands of aluminium steel boats, needed to optimise capacity as quickly as possible from its new state of the art production facility in the Gold Coast. In a highly evolving market with over 80 current designs, planning and managing workflow was a complex operation.
The Solution
A series of workshops with all supervisory personnel provided them with clear insight into the Theory of Constraints philosphy and how it could optimise the efforts of the manufacturing cell. The constraint was identified as the welding shop and so Ensemble assisted the organisation to change practices that would exploit the constraint.
Time and motion studies were conducted to identify issues which inhibited the welding shop from being fully utilised. In addition an analysis of hull fitting practices was conducted and recommendations were implemented to increase efficiencies. Using the Thinking Process and Drum Buffer Rope applications Ensemble helped Telwater synchronise their manufacturing operations and align staff objectives with those of the overall business.
